Consumer Advocate Seeks PIP Data

Insurance Consumer Advocate Robin Westcott has requested information from insurers writing personal injury protection (PIP) auto insurance.  The request for information, made through an open letter to the auto insurance industry, is designed to facilitate the Consumer Advocate’s analysis of problems with PIP and potential solutions.  As noted in her letter, the Consumer Advocate has requested that insurers identify the types of medical procedures that are most commonly billed in the PIP system.  The Office of Insurance Regulation (OIR) had only limited information in this area in connection with its report on PIP.  In addition, the Consumer Advocate has asked the industry to substantiate its claims that attorneys’ fees are a significant cost driver in PIP.

Although the letter does not specify a response deadline, any companies interested in providing information should do so as promptly as possible because discussions about problems with PIP and potential solutions are already well underway in anticipation of the 2012 legislative session.
