Amid flood of complaints, Florida insurance regulator warns insurers to follow the law

The state’s top insurance regulator has warned insurance companies “to make sure they are following the law” in responding to claims from last year’s active hurricane season — or face the consequences.

The admonition comes in the wake of the first stress test of new rules regarding disputes between insurers and policyholders. It’s the first time that hundreds of thousands of storm damage claims have been filed since the Legislature passed reforms that hobbled policyholders’ ability to take their insurers to court in disputes of how much it costs to repair storm damage.
