FSU Rises in Rankings…. for Risk Management and Insurance

Florida State fans are accustomed to discussing rankings around this time of the year.  Typically, the rankings being discussed pertain to football and are associated with the playoff picture or bowl games.  This year, the football rankings are out the window, but another ranking warrants mentioning.

FSU’s Dr. William T. Hold/The National Alliance program in Risk Management & Insurance is the 6th-ranked risk management and insurance program in the nation according to the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings.  We have one of the top risk management and insurance programs in the nation right here in a state that sees a wide range of complex issues, from personal residential to auto, to workers’ compensation and health insurance.

The FSU program has seen a significant increase in the number of students choosing RMI has a major in the last few years.  The program’s highly-ranked online master’s program also has seen an increase in applicants.  The program’s growth can be attributed to several factors, but most importantly it is a direct result of the university’s commitment to having one of the best program’s in the nation.  From the risk management and insurance department to the College of Business as a whole to the president’s office, the university is committed to the program.  Students are exposed to risk management as part of the business school curriculum, and many begin to see the opportunities available in the industry.

Key support for the program comes from an executive council comprises of representatives of various segments of the insurance industry.  I have been fortunate to have been a member of this executive council for several years and to have seen the increasing number of students choosing RMI has a major.  One of the primary factors in the students’ decisions comes from the range of jobs available in the industry.  Whether the students were drawn to the business school by their interests in finance, accounting, marketing, or any other discipline, the insurance industry offers students a chance to pursue their goals.

In a year when the usual rankings aren’t as much fun to discuss, we should take a minute to celebrate the continued success of FSU’s program in risk management and insurance.
