Workers’ compensation might be extended to Florida employees hurt in Haiti

Florida employees who are sent to Haiti for rebuilding efforts and are injured could be covered by their standard workers’ compensation policy under a request submitted to Florida’s insurance department Tuesday.
Florida Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink sent a request March 2 to the National Council on Compensation Insurance. She requested the council develop an endorsement to extend Florida workers’ compensation coverage when employees are working temporarily in Haiti or another foreign country.
If approved, the new form would be available for use by insurers writing workers’ compensation insurance in Florida.
